I went to the Lyndon Reserve
this morning in the hope of being able to photograph the Long-tailed Duck
before going to the Egleton Reserve. I
had seen a Red Kite at Preston on route and a Stoat as I walked towards the
hide. On entering Teal Hide I found that
Malcolm was already there. The
Long-tailed Duck wasn’t on view but Malcolm had seen earlier but it had swum
out of view. It wasn’t too long before
it reappeared but it remained rather distant, although I did manage to get one
or two record shots.
Long-tailed Duck
Whilst observing the bird it
did raise its wings on a couple of occasions and it looked as though it would
be around for a few more days as it would still have been flight-less. From the hide we could see a single Osprey in
Manton bay, three Green Sandpipers flew in front, five Common Terns were over the
water and two Yellow Wagtails flew over.
The Long-tailed Duck then swam
out of sight again and so we went for a walk as far as Deep water Hide. There was a Marsh Tit on the feeders as we
began the walk and during the short walk we saw two Willow Warblers, two Lesser
Whitethroats, a Whitethroat and a Spotted Flycatcher and also heard a
Chiffchaff and a second Whitethroat.
It was soon time to head for
the Egleton Reserve to ensure that Lecture Theatre Two was ready for tomorrow’s
Birdfair lectures.
