A brief visit to Thornton Reservoir, Leicestershire - August 22, 2016

Yesterday there was a White-winged Black Tern at Watermead Country Park and a Gannet at Thornton Reservoir but after our final stint at the Birdfair we decided to wait for news today before going.

The White-winged Black Tern was seen early morning but had apparently flown off but the Gannet was still present and so we headed for Thornton Reservoir.

Roger called just after we had set off to say he had seen it but that it was distant from the car park and that he was going around to the north-east corner to hopefully get closer.  We parked alongside the road in the south-east corner and then walked along the path alongside the eastern arm.  As we approached the far end we could see the bird on the water and shortly afterwards we found Roger.  The bird was just sitting on the water and wasn’t too far out.  I was able to get a few shots off using the new camera and was very pleased with the results.  As we walked back to the car a Grey wagtail flew over and there were a couple of Buzzards to the east.
