A Wryneck had been reported at
Rutland Water this afternoon and was confirmed early this evening so Dave and I
decided to go.
There were four other birders
in the hide when we arrived and two had seen it about ten minutes before we
arrived but it had now disappeared. It
had flown in from the right and landed on a mud bank and then walked into some
vegetation. As we waited a female Marsh
Harrier, with wing-tags, was observed hunting along the bund for quite some
time. A Little Egret flew over and there
were two Pintail on the water, a Common Sandpiper on one of the islands and a
Green Sandpiper was heard.
As time progressed I began to
think we weren’t going to see it when someone said it was out on top of the
bank. I had a job finding at first but
eventually we all got nice views as it fed for over fifteen minutes before
flying off to the right.
