An afternoon at Brandon Marsh, Warwickshire - March 1, 2013

I was out with Dave this afternoon and we were going to Brandon Marsh where we hoped to see a Green-winged Teal.

On arrival we went straight to the River Pool hide where the teal was frequenting.  When we got into the hide another birder informed us that the teal was partially concealed behind some trees on the far bank.  I was able to see it but only the breast and part of the vertical white stripe.  There were plenty of other Teal feeding on the water and also two Shelduck, which were chased off by a second pair and Dave picked up a Water Rail as it hurried along the far shore.  After some considerable time the Green-winged Teal disappeared altogether and we moved of East Marsh hide where we found a third-winter Yellow-legged Gull amongst the numerous Black-headed Gulls and there was also a third-winter Herring Gull and several Lesser Black-backed Gulls.  A single Oystercatcher on the island was the only other bird of note although there was a nice party of Shoveler.

AS we approached Carlton hide we heard a Cetti’s Warbler call but it was to be our only contact.  There was very little from hide so we walked down a new path to a screen, which overlooked a nice marshy area and although there was nothing of note it did look to have good potential.  We retuned to the River Pool hide to find the Green-winged Teal was now showing rather well.  We had some good views as it fed towards the centre of the water but just a bit too distant to get good photos.

It had been a pleasant afternoon at this rather nice reserve and we had seen the target bird and a number of other nice sightings.
