A day’s birding in Lincolnshire and Leicestershire & Rutland - March 16, 2013

Dave and set off for Whisby Nature Park in Lincolnshire where there had been three Bean Geese for some time and they were still present yesterday.

The birds had actually been about a mile to the west of the park and as we arrived near the site I saw a few Greylag Geese drop into a roadside field.  When we parked and began to scan the field it was clear that there where many more Greylag Geese but Dave soon found the three Tundra Bean Geese at the back of the field.  We watched them for a while from the car and also saw a couple of Oystercatcher feeding in the ploughed field next two a small patch of flood water.

From Whisby we drove around the Lincoln bypass and headed for Fiskerton Fen where there had been an American Wigeon since February.  We found the flooded meadows and soon realised that there were quite a lot of distant Wigeon, which we scoped from the car.  We were on site for nearly two hours and it was quite frustrating as due to the heavy rain we could only observe from the car and we were unable to find the American Wigeon, although it was reported as being present mid-afternoon.  We did see a female Goosander, two Little Egrets and a single Oystercatcher.

Having add enough of the viewing from the car in the rain we set off for Rutland Water and it had stopped raining by the time we arrived in the car park.  After some lunch, seeing a Red Kite over the car park, and signing in at the centre we set off for lagoon three.  The path around the back of lagoon three was flooded again after rain but I did manage to get through and there was a Buzzard flying between lagoons three and four.

When we arrived in the hide we soon located a drake Smew and eventually found two red-heads.  There was also a male and three female Scaup amongst a few Tufted Ducks but there appeared to be far fewer wildfowl than on Thursday.  Two Green Sandpipers were resting to the left of the hide but there was no sign of the reported Black-tailed Godwit, which had flow off before we arrived.  Two Little Egrets flew over with one landing on the edge of the reeds to the far left and Dave picked up a Bittern in flight, which we were all able to watch as it flew quite high above the reeds before dropping back in.

We walked the short distance to smew hide on lagoon two were found a male and female Scaup but nothing else.

As we walked to dunlin hide on lagoon four six Curlew flew over and flew off towards the centre.  From the hide we found five Shelduck, two Oystercatcher and a single Redshank and the Curlew returned dropping into the meadow.

We departed early today as Dave wanted to get back to watch the Wales versus England Rugby match, in which Wales thrashed England.
