Dave, Roger and myself had
decided to go to Rutland Water this afternoon as a Wood Sandpiper had been
reported on lagoon four.
There was some heavy rain just
before we left but the rest of the afternoon remained dry. We signed in and walked to lagoon four seeing
quite a few Meadow Brown and Ringlet butterflies in the Egleton meadows and
several Speckled Woods on the edge of the woods and there were also a few
Common Blue Damselflies.
When we arrived in sandpiper
hide overlooking lagoon four we soon located two Black-tailed Godwits and two
Ruff just to the right of the hide and I picked up a second-summer
Mediterranean Gull amongst the more numerous Black-headed Gulls. AS we scanned the lagoon we also found six
Oystercatchers, two Little Ringed Plovers, two Ringed Plovers and two Green
Sandpipers. Roger also found a single
Dunlin and Common Sandpiper but there was no sign of the Wood Sandpiper. Two Red Kites and two Buzzards were observed
over Burley Wood area and a Hobby flew over.
Dave had noticed an Osprey bathing on the lagoon and it eventually went
and sat on one of the man-made perches.
I then picked up two Ravens over Burley House, which was only my second
sighting at the reserve. We heard that
the Spoonbill present the last two days had been flushed from the north arm and
headed back towards the reserve and shortly afterwards was seen on lagoon
one. We decided to go to plover hide
before returning to the centre but all we found was a third Green Sandpiper.
As we walked back through the
summer walk we fund more Meadow Brown butterflies and Common Blue Damselflies
were more numerous but the best find was a Blood-vein moth.
We soon located the Spoonbill
from the centre and had a fort Green Sandpiper over lagoon one. An Osprey was noticed over south arm three
and was seen to plunge down and was then seen flying towards lagoon four with a
fish and was probably the bird we had seen earlier. Dave then picked up an immature Marsh Harrier
flying along the bund on lagoon two.
As we drove by Eye Brook
Reservoir the hay field in which the old oak stands had been cut and there was
three Red Kites and a Buzzard feeding on the ground. There was also a Little Owl in the tree.
