I went to Rutland Water as
there had been a Knot present yesterday on lagoon four.
After signing in I spent the
rest of the afternoon in sandpiper hide on lagoon four. There was no sign of the Knot but there were
plenty of other waders present to maintain an interest. One of the first waders I noticed was a
summer plumage Sanderling with a Ringed Plover and I eventually found seven
Ringed Plovers and four Dunlin in the same area. There was also two Little Ringed Plovers
nearby and two Green Sandpiper seemed to spend most of the afternoon working
the same areas but a single Common Sandpiper was a little more elusive. I eventually managed to find three
Greenshanks but only one could be found with any regularity, preferring an area
close to the hide. Later during the
afternoon seven Curlews arrived with particularly short bills, obviously
immatures, and these were followed by three with much longer bills. Two Black-tailed Godwits also made a very
brief visit before they flew off to the west.
An Osprey came in to bathe
causing some disturbance and two more were observed over Burley Wood as was a
Red Kite. At one point all the birds got
up with the Lapwings and gulls going to a great height before some of the
Lapwing retuned but most of the large gulls including three Yellow-legged Gulls
never came back. A Peregrine had been
reported earlier on the reserve and I suspect that it what caused the
disturbance but I couldn’t locate it or any other raptor.
I eventually decided to return
to the car park and home after a very sharp shower.
