An afternoon at Rutland Water, Rutland - March 17, 2014

Dave was going to Rutland Water this afternoon to try and get Garganey and Sand Martin, which he had been unable to see over the weekend.

On arrival the news was not too good as neither Garganey nor Sand Martin had been reported.  We went to bittern hide on lagoon three but other birders returning from lagoon three had seen very little.  There was nothing of note visible from bittern and plover fared little better, although we did see the red-headed Smew.  We walked back to sandpiper hide on lagoon four and between there and plover hide managed to see eighteen Shelduck, a Little Egret, five Oystercatcher, six Ringed Plover and Green Sandpiper and three Redshank.  There were a couple of Buzzards and a Red Kite visible over Burley Wood and a Green Woodpecker was observed close to dunlin hide.

We had a look on lagoon one on reaching the centre and did find the Black-tailed Godwit that has been present for a week now.  There were three Little Egrets on the wet meadow and a Dunlin and Redshank flew in and landed on the long island.  A Barn Owl was also seen on the nest box.
We stopped at Manton Bridge as we were leaving and had views of the female Osprey that had returned today, closely behind the site B male that had got back yesterday.
