A half-day's birding in Leicestershire & Rutland - June 14, 2013

Went out today on the basis that showers were forecast for the afternoon but none occurred.

At Eye Brook Reservoir the brood of Shelduck appeared to only three, which was nine originally.  An Osprey flew along the northern shore and there were at least seven Common Terns present.

At Rutland Water I spent all of my time around lagoons three and four but there was no sign of the reported Dunlin and Turnstone seen earlier in the day but there was a Grey Plover on lagoon four.  I also found two Little Ringed Plovers and two Ringed Plovers on lagoon four and a brood of Shelduck containing seven young.  The two Oystercatcher chicks that I had not seen on Tuesday were observed and there were three young Lapwings on island eight and one of the original four on island three was still doing ok.  The two summer-plumage Little Gulls were still present and using lagoon four to rest and preen and there was a single Redshank.  A immature Peregrine was also observed as it circled over lagoon three before heading off west.

On lagoon three I could only find a single Garganey, one of the males, but the female Pintail was still present.  I counted forty-one terns feeding over lagoon three and there was a Green Sandpiper from bittern hide.  Two Red Kite were observed over Burley Wood and a third over the Egleton car park ands even Buzzard were observed.
