A day in Leicestershire & Rutland - May 31, 2013

I was taking my granddaughter Clia out today and we were hoping to see some butterflies.  We went to Swithland Wood first where there had been a Wood Warbler for the last two days.  After parking we walked down the main bridal path and met Roger who had already located the bird.  He came back with us but before we arrived I could hear it singing and we had some good views as it sand fairly low down before going higher into the trees.

As we walked back to the car we heard a Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming but were unable to locate and there were two Spotted Flycatchers just before we got back the car park.

From Swithland Wood we then went to Ketton in Rutland where we were hoping to find some butterflies.  On arrival it had clouded over a little and there were certainly fewer butterflies than when Dave and I came last week and I assume the wet conditions over the last few days had, had an impact.  We walked the area just near the car park before we took lunch and we did find a single Dingy Skipper but there was no sign of the Green Hairstreaks I had seen last week.

After lunch we went through to the larger of the quarries but it was still very quiet but there were several Small Heath and Brimstone and we also found Common Heath and Burnet Companion moths.

On the way back to the car we had another look in the first field and found two Grizzled Skippers and a female Common Blue.

We left Ketton and went to another Leicestershire & Rutland Trust reserve, Bloody Oaks Quarry.  Again it was very quiet but I did find another Dingy Skipper and Common Carpet and Silver Y moths.

From Bloody Oaks we went to Rutland Water and after an ice cream walked to the new Bittern hide as Clia wanted to see the hide my wife and I had funded.  There were a few terns over lagoon three and I did see two of the first-summer Little Gulls, thirteen Ringed Plovers and more Common Terns on lagoon four.
