A day at Rutland Water, Rutland - July 18, 2013

The Pacific Golden Plover had been found late on Tuesday night and was still present yesterday and so I decided to make a further visit to see it.  I arrived at the same time as Terry and walked to heron hide with him but seeing very little on route.  The hide was pretty full but we managed to squeeze in via the back door to the hide and scoped the plover on the far shore.  The views were better today as it was a little closer and the light was better with less heat haze.  It spent the whole time feeding on the muddy shore the right over the bund where it had been on Monday and was more mobile.  There was also seventeen Little Egrets on the bund and a Greenshank was seen in flight as I arrived.  Two Ospreys were also visible in Manton Bay and Osprey.

Ken was in the hide and because it was getting pretty warm and overcrowded we decided to take a walk and went to fieldfare hide overlook south arm three, seeing an Oystercatcher on lagoon eight on route.  The bay near fieldfare is now pretty good for waders and we had three Green Sandpiper and two Greenshanks but there was very little else and we moved off and called at both snipe and mallard hides on the way back to the centre.

We saw very little from either hide, other than another fifteen Little Egrets on lagoon one, and so after lunch we walked to shoveler hide on lagoon three.

Broad-bodied Chaser

There was a single Oystercatcher, two male Ruff, a Black-tailed Godwit, three Curlew, seven Green Sandpipers and six Greenshanks feeding in front and to the right of the hide and clearly the conditions here for waders are ideal.  One adult and the two juvenile Shelduck were present and a single Wigeon was of interest but there was little else.  Lagoon four produced a single first-summer Little Gull and three Yellow-legged Gull and at least thirty terns were present.

It was nice to see the Pacific Golden Plover again, which was well supported by a number of waders making the journey worthwhile.
