Dave, Roger and I went to
Nottinghamshire today in the hope of seeing some long staying good birds.
We started off at Rufford Country
Perk where we saw four Hawfinches before they flew off into the wood. There was a good selection of commoner
woodland birds, including Nuthatch and Treecreeper but there was no sign of any
Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. Five male and
three female Goosanders were also observed on the lake.

Our next port of call was
Budby Common where we were hoping to see Parrot Crossbill but there was no sign.
Our only rewards were two Buzzard and brief views of Green Woodpecker and Jay,
although eight Bullfinches drinking from a pool made a nice sight.
Not being too far away from
the Welbeck Watchpoint we decided to have lunch there. We soon had several Buzzards soaring above
the woodland and then Roger picked up what turned out to be a female Goshawk. I then picked it up again a few minutes later
and it provided some excellent but distant views for quite some time. We eventually had at least seven Buzzards and
a Kestrel as well as the Goshawk.
A visit to Clumber Park
produced four Mandarins and fifteen Siskin from the bridge over the lake. There was also a lot of activity around a
feeding station close to the bridge with at least three Marsh Tits and a
Nuthatch visiting regularly.

Our final visit to a rubbish
tip near Cotham was not very successful and despite seeing plenty of distant
gulls we saw nothing of note.
